Anti-globalisation and climate activists protested against the G7 meeting in the southwest coastal town of Biarritz, saying the world leaders don't do what they say and that the rich-poor divide is growing due to the lack of action from them.
Armed cops clashed with the protesters with French police firing fast into a camp set up in Urrunge, roughly 25 kilometres south of Biarritz.
G7 gatherings tend to attract thousands of protesters. More than 13,000 police officers are guarding the summit site in Biarritz under fears that anarchist groups might have tried to derail the protest, which has been billed as a peaceful family event.
Issues on the agenda at the G7 include the global economy, tackling inequality and responding to the challenges of the digital age and the rise of artificial intelligence.
